Today we’re going to talk about something kind of funny. We’re going to talk about how superstitions and those negative thoughts and feelings that you get there on the water – how they’re affecting you and how you can avoid those to catch more fish.
Superstitions In Fishing – They’re Out There
Now first to start off – superstitions, basically that’s something where you have a fear of something happening and then it affects your fishing. I’ve had this a little bit and I really try and stay away from superstitions. There’s people out there that have superstitions on a little bit of everything.
Some people are really bad about it, and a lot of people have you know little ones here and there where they may have one about fishing, those are really common one – where you’re having a banana on a fishing boat is bad luck, okay.
And then there’s ones about having; I’ve had people tell me that if they have cold markers in their live well before tournament or during the morning of the tournament they’ll have a bad day. It’s bad luck. Or if they have the net ready to lay the fish and net one up, that is bad luck. They’ll end up not catching one.
And these are just these negative fears; these negative thoughts; this anxiety that’s in your mind. It’s absolutely fooling you. And a lot of times it actually comes true just because of the way you think and you’re not focused on what you’re doing. You’re focused on your superstition and your fear.
And when you’re not focused on the job that needs to get done and how you need to catch those fish. And this really applies to tournament fishermen. But if you just really want to catch more fish try and get those superstitions out.
Fishing Superstitions Are About Facing Your Fears
When I was very early in my bass fishing, you know literally just applying some of these basic stuff and just learning how to catch fish, I learned really early that I didn’t want superstitions and fears to get in the way and cloud my judgment and cloud my intuition and cloud the hard work, the time the money that I put into this.
So very early I learned to face them okay. I remember when I first started out I would have a superstition that if we caught a fish on the first cast it was going to be a bad day. Okay. I had a day where I caught a fish on the first cast very early.
This goes back like 6, 7 years ago when I was first starting and I didn’t catch a fish the rest of the day. I didn’t have another bite. And it was because I was thinking that way. I wasn’t focused on the job at hand. Another one that I’ve even had is if I have a net in the boat it’s going to affect me okay. And I’m not going to catch fish.
Or if I’ve had the same thing with cold markers. If we’re ready for a tournament we use this cold markers to help get our fish and be efficient throughout the day and changing fish out so we can have the biggest bag possible to win tournaments.
And I’ve had my cold markers ready and days that I have about the day – I mean wow, that’s why. I mean superstition next time I go I’m not going to have ’em ready, you know. And I’m not going to do that; bad way to go. Face your fears on that.
An Opportunity To Grow As A Fisherman
So when I would start out if I like a banana in the boat. I actually see it as an opportunity to grow now. I’ve had days where I don’t bring a banana. I wouldn’t bring a banana on my boat but I have my dad bring a banana on the boat or something. And you know it’s the first time I’m being faced with this. I’ve heard this superstition right, I don’t necessarily believe it but it could become one in my own mind.
So he brings a banana on the boat and I, and at that moment it’s like I’m not going to let that get in the way. I’m not going to. Today I’m going to go out here and I’m going to catch fish. So that way if I want to bring a banana on the boat next time for my fishing tournament or something I’m not going to have that in my mind.
It’s not going to affect me. It’s going to be completely out of my mind. A matter of fact – I’m going to laugh and I’m going to chuckle at it. You know why? Because I’m going to control my reality. I’m going to control how that affects me. And I’m not going to let that cloud my judgment, my intuitions. I’m going to get out there and I’m going to focus at the job at hand.
I’m going to put my head down and fish. So I saw it as an opportunity to grow and guess what? I remember those first couple times my dad would bring a banana on the boat. I saw it as an opportunity to grow and I could not wait to get out on the water that morning and catch those fish and prove myself wrong so that I could overcome that; my own mental.
And that’s a big deal, a lot of people don’t understand this is a sport. And there’s people that make good money in the fishing industry. You know 6 digit figures in the fishing industry and it’s a sport okay. And it’s a full time job and there’s a lot of mental that goes in this game. There really is, there’s a lot of people that don’t understand it.
So keep that in mind, face those fears. If you have one, if it’s having the net in the boat – I challenge you step up. Go take that net with you the next time you go fishing and prove to yourself that you are stronger than that fear. That you can control your mind.
And you’re going to say no, “I’m not going to let that happen. I’m not going to let that ruin my day”. Experience all you can that time on the water. Don’t let anything get in your way. I’m going tell you what – you’re going to catch more fish, you’re going to land more fish. You’re going to have more opportunities the most of your buddies because they’re too sick and tired of having all superstitions that are completely messing them up. And they’re all just negative and pessimistic. And it gets them nowhere.
